How do I Apply Toppers® Universal Top Coats®

Toppers® are professional use products and require adequate training prior to use.

Make sure that your nails are prepared well, and are dry and clean.

Apply your base coat and colour from your chosen brand.

If you are using gel polish, follow the directions and cure with your gel polish with an LED or UV lamp. If you are using nail varnish, allow it to dry.

Select the Toppers® Universal Top Coat® of your choice.

Apply Toppers® by painting in strokes or dabbing with your brush to get the effect that you want.

Avoid the nail wall area and remember to seal the free edge. Don’t overload your nails with Toppers®.

When you are happy, cure your Toppers® top coat under an LED lamp for 30 (based on a 36 watt lamp) seconds. A UV lamp will take up to 2 minutes to cure.

All gel polish can cause heat spikes if applied thickly, and Toppers® is a deliciously luxurious gel!

To avoid spikes place the nails under the LED light for 8-10 seconds. Then remove your hand for 10 seconds. Put back under and complete the cure with 20 seconds of curing time. Alternatively place the nails half way into the lamp to activate the curing process, and then place the nails fully under the lamp after 10 seconds to completely cure for the remaining 20 seconds.

Toppers® top coats will cure to a silky smooth finish.

Toppers® are No Wipe top coats that do not leave a sticky layer after curing.

Smile and enjoy!

How do I remove Toppers® Universal Top Coats®

Toppers® top coats are soak off gel polishes. This means that they are removed in the same way as all gel polishes.

To remove the gel polish, you can gently buff the surface to remove the surface layer if you want to, but buffing isn’t necessary. If you want to, use a 240 grit removing the shine (or matte).

Never file the nail plate as this will cause damage and thinning of the natural nail.

Use acetone-based nail varnish remover, to remove Toppers®. Soak the remover in cotton wool, and wrap the nails in foil for 15 minutes so that the gel polish softens.

After 15 minutes, remove the wraps and dispose of them safely. Next with an orange stick gently remove the gel taking care not to dig or scrape at the nail plate. The gel should come away from the nail easily. If it doesn’t repeat the process with fresh wraps for another five minutes.

To finish wash the hands and apply cuticle oil.

Can I Infill with Toppers®

Yes you can. As the nails grow you may want to infill between the cuticle and the gel just as you would with other traditional gel polish systems.

Gently file the ridge between the nail and gel layer until it is smooth. Avoid filing the nail bed itself or the cuticle area as this can cause damage.

Apply your base coat, colour coat and Toppers® to the new growth area curing with a UV or LED lamp between layers of polish.

I've had a heat spike what do I do?

The process of curing Toppers uses UV or LED light and releases heat. This is the same for all gel polishes. If you experience a heat spike these are the measures that you should take:

Ensure that you do not file the nail bed. Thin nails will reduce the protection layer between the gel polish and the nerves in the nail, and heat will pass through more easily.

Don’t overload the nail with too much delicious Toppers® top coat. Toppers® are designed to be thick luxurious gel polishes, but they can still be applied relatively thinly.

As per the instructions for applying Toppers® introduce the hand slowly to the light so that the reaction starts more slowly, and produces less heat. Alternatively, place the hand under the light for 8-10 seconds, remove it for a few seconds, and then place it back under the light to cure for the allotted time. UV lamps require up to 2 minutes to cure gel polishes, and LED lamps typically 30 seconds.

What is the best brand of gel nail polish to use with Toppers®?

One of the great benefits of Toppers® Universal Top Coats® is that there is no best brand to use with them, because Toppers® works with all good quality gel polish and nail polish brands. If the brand is up for the job, then Toppers® is as well. Give your favourite brand the Toppers® test, and send us your photographs!

Can I use Toppers® gel polish top coat with regular nail varnish?

Yes. You can use Toppers® gel polish top coat with normal nail polish. Ensure your nail varnish is dry, and then follow the instructions for Toppers® curing under a UV or LED lamp.

Is Toppers® Shellac?

No. Shellac is a trademark name for the gel polish brand CND. Shellac and gel polish are often confused and the terms are often interchanged. Shellac is a gel polish, and Toppers® are also gel polishes. There the similarity ends. Our clients do use CND colours with Toppers®, and they also use OPI, Gelish, IBD and all good brands. Try your own favourite gel polish brand with Toppers® and see what you can create!

How does Toppers® top coat cure and harden?

If you are not familiar with gel polish then the photoinitiation process where monomers become polymers may be new to you. The process of curing gel polish, and Toppers® needs light.

The light from UV and LED lamps includes light at the frequency needed to release a free radical that starts a chain reaction in the gel polish. The chain reaction is exothermic and releases heat. It also converts the monomers and oligomers in the gel polish into long, rock solid chains of polymers. It is these polymer chains in Toppers® gel polish that give it the hard-wearing finish.

We need to add a warning here. All lamps are different. The rate of the reaction affects the heat released in the reaction. This sometimes causes a heat spike. If you experience this is can be painful, but is easily remedied. Read the answer to the question: I’ve had a heat spike, what do I do?

Can Toppers® be used over acrylic nail extensions?

Yes. Toppers® top coats can be used over acrylic nail extensions.

Can Toppers® be used over builder gel, gum gel, polygel or other gel-based nail extension products?

Yes. That was a little answer for a big question! Toppers® gel polish top coats are Universal Top Coats® and can be used in the same way as all gel polish top coats.

Do I need to wipe Toppers® top coats after curing?

No. You don’t need to wipe Toppers® after curing. They are no wipe top coats. If you do experience a sticky layer after curing, then your lamp hasn’t cured the top coat fully. Check the bulbs if it is a UV lamp. They do need replacing regularly.

Can I showcase my manicures using Toppers®?

Absolutely! We’d love to see your work. Tag us on instagram @Toppersnails, or use the Hashtag #toppersnails, and we might feature YOUR mani on the Toppers® international website!

How long will a Toppers® manicure last?

Toppers® gel polish manicures are hard wearing and with normal wear last 21 days when the instructions for use are followed fully.

Why do you have a plain universal matte top coat?

People were asking for a universal matte top coat, because sometimes they just don’t feel shiny, and only a matte will do. This is a no wipe universal matte top coat though. So it’s a Top Matte!
